Make It A Real Disney Vacation

Have you ever prepared to leave on vacation and turned to say goodbye to your cat or dog, only to be filled with guilt and shame to see the sad look on their face? Or perhaps you have had trouble finding someone to care for your beloved companions while you are gone.

Sure, there are now pet hotels and kennels which take good care of all your furry friends while you and your family are away. But consider this: when my family went to Disneyland once year when I was in middle school, we put our Great Dane and German shepherd up in a kennel, only to find out on our trip that they had escaped.

Now, you should know that both our dogs were successfully recovered by the facility, but I can tell you that our anxiety was even greater than the kids' from the movie Homeward Bound. You can eliminate this anxiety and add a whole new dimension to your vacation by simply taking your pet along. After all, how is it a real family vacation without your pet?

When I say "simply," that is not to say that doing so is very simple. Many airlines reserve the right to refuse to allow pets on board, so if you are planning to fly to your destination, check with the airline first. However, many railroad companies are pet-friendly, so you might consider traveling by train instead.

If you are planning a road trip, start training your cat or dog to be content in the car now. Excessive barking, screeching, scratching, or lunging behaviors need to be minimized before taking your trip. Otherwise, the stress of the journey will end up being maximized!

If you are going to take your pet along, find out about any necessary pet deposits required on your rental residence. Sometimes these can be pretty substantial, but for a week or longer, they can equate to what you would pay a kennel to care for your dog or cat. Plus, if your animal does no damage to the rental, you get it back! You couldn't say the same about an animal-sitting service.

No matter where you're going, you need to do some prior research on veterinarians and animal hospitals in the area. Fortunately, the internet is a great resource to find reviews and ratings so you can find one (of each) that you can trust.

You can also use the web to find off-leash beaches and parks where your pet can enjoy a carefree vacation--along with you and your family.

Taking your pet with you ensures that you can minimize your anxiety and maximize the enjoyment for all members of your family--especially since you will have less anxiety over whether or not your cat or dog is being well cared for and not roaming the streets in search of you, like our Great Dane and German shepherd did!
